DESCRIPTION
This course gives the understanding operation and protection of Electrical Equipment especially in Power Plant of Geothermal and Steam turbine generation.
The main electrical equipment for the above plant are Synchronous generator, Switchgear covering SF6 and Vacuum Power Circuit Breakers, Oil Power Transformer, Transmision and Distribution Conductor, Electric motors, and also Protective Relays. The purpose of this course is to develop a thorough understanding of those electrical equipment.
Discuss safe and proper operation and protection of critical components and application, operation, inspection and testing issues with an overriding emphasis on safety. Case studies covering the main manufacturer’s equipment will illustrate the important practical principles. Other power system protection components will be discussed as well to ensure that main electrical equipment in power plant is understood in the correct context.

- Classification selection and type determination of plant electrical equipment
3.SAFETY POLICIES
- General safety precautions and the use of personal protective equipment
- Principles of safety rules, Principles of personnel authorisation
- Operative training for safe operation of switchgear
- Isolation in a circuit breaker context

- Operational and safety locking, caution and danger notices
- Safe working in electrical equipment environment
4.POWER GENERATOR OPERATION AND PROTECTION
- Electrical generation, Frequency, construction,
- Exciter, brushless exciter, PMG, Voltage regulation, load on generator
- Protection device 32, 40, 46, 51V, 51GN, 87G, 87 GG, 60, 59, and 86.
- Relay Coordination, Logic Diagram.
5.SWITCHGEAR – ORIGINS & TYPES
- Single line diagrams, Active and passive network components, Circuit breaker utilisation
- Alternative forms of MV switchgear – ring main units, load breaking/fault making switches, Fuse switches, HV fuses in combination with, and as alternative to circuit breakers
- Switchgear in association with disconnectors, Fixed and withdrawable designs, Switchgear standards, Factors affecting switchgear selection
6.OIL POWER TRANSFORMER
- Construction, Vector Group
- Buchloz Protection Relay, Jansen, Sudden Pressure Relay, Neutral Grounding Resistor, Power Transformer Protective Relay.
7.TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION CONDUCTORS
- Nomenclature, cable terminilogy, construction, reference standards
- Single core copper and aluminium power cables, three single core underground or overhead twisted cables, overhead transmission lines.
8.ELECTRIC MOTOR OPERATION AND PROTECTION
- Speed, Torque, Power and their relationship
- Construction, losses and efficiency, rotattion
- Characteristic, Starting, Dahlander
- Motor Protective relays
9.POWER CIRCUIT BREAKERS & FUSES
- Main function of Circuit Breaker and Fuse
- Air CB, Oil CB, Vacuum CB, and SF6 CB
- Closing and Opening operation of Circuit Breaker
